No Back Doors. No Open Windows.
To boot or pre-boot, that is the question. There’s no doubt that operating systems (OSs) are complicated given the sheer amount of code that must be flawlessly interfaced and the potential vulnerabilities that can ensue. While full disk encryption (FDE) is one step closer to a more secure OS, encryption without strong authentication isn’t enough. For security-conscious users, pre-boot authentication is the only way to go.

Vendor Review: SecureWave Protects Microsoft Operating System Platforms
The traditional approach to network intrusion management is to detect an intrusion, analyze it, and then works toward eradicating it. By buckling down your host security, securing the input/output devices, and intercepting Trojan executables, SecureWave can prevent intrusions from happening up front.

WINDOWS 1258: are currently lacking in Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. SecureEXE SecureEXE is a second-generation intrusion prevention product. It uses the opposite strategy that anti-virus products use. Instead of identifying intrusion types and writing signature solutions, SecureEXE locks down the systems and allows only authorized applications to run. Before any type of application gets executed, SecureEXE compares a checksum of the executable with a known good checksum list. If the proposed execution is

IA-64 Linux From Red Hat
Red Hat announces the availability of the source code for IA-64 platforms, the first of which will be Intel’s “Itanium” processor, due later this year.

WINDOWS 1258: Itanium. We suspect that Windows has a larger lead in that arena, although we do not expect that Redmond has a ton of apps ready to roll whenever 64-bit Windows finally ships. Red Hat already has 64-bit experience on Compaq s Alpha processor, and Microsoft very publicly killed the Alpha-based version of 64-bit Windows (Ref. TEC News Analysis ), so the edge in technology familiarity goes to Red Hat in this case, but not by much. It would certainly be nice for Red Hat if they could get some of the

Microsoft Introduces New Consumer Electronics-Plus Era
Don't expect to see this all happen in the year 2000, much software development must occur and standards must be decided upon prior to generic consumer electronic integration.

WINDOWS 1258: is reintroducing the flailing Windows CE device as the Pocket PC to kick off the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Over the past two years 3Com s Palm Pilot has captured over 70% of PDA sales, requiring Microsoft to go back to the drawing board. The result has been a full software update to the product s operating system. The new CE operating system will potentially be implemented on a wide array of consumer electronics, from car stereos to cellular phones to household appliances. The train of thought

Microsoft Windows Services For Unix – SFU = DOA?

Workload Automation: The Key to Managing Windows Server Sprawl
Many companies use data centers running processes across multiple Windows servers using built-in schedulers instead of automating nightly batch streams on a mainframe. Simple schedulers work well on individual servers with only a handful of tasks, but scheduling becomes more difficult once you include dependencies, such as incoming files, the behavior of other applications, or the completion of business processes on other servers. Workload automation using a job scheduling system can save money and reduce complexity in the long term—read this white paper to learn more about solutions to

Red Hat

WINDOWS 1258: Red Hat (NASDAQ: RHAT) is a Linux and open source provider. The company's software solutions and services are based on the open source model and serve enterprises worldwide.

Will MS try the Open Source Gambit with WinCE? Why Not – Nothing Else Seems to Work
In what may be another attempt to gain some kind of foothold in the handheld and embedded-OS market, rumors are floating that Microsoft will open the source code for Windows CE.

WINDOWS 1258: is contemplating giving away Windows CE to some developers for free. The company is unlikely to go so far as to try to claim its effort to be Linux-like open source, but it nonetheless seems to be counting on riding the open source movement s coattails. Microsoft Corp. could make public its plans to open the Windows CE source base as soon as its Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in late April, sources claim. For embedded-device markets such as set top boxes, Microsoft easily could afford
