No Back Doors. No Open Windows.
To boot or pre-boot, that is the question. There’s no doubt that operating systems (OSs) are complicated given the sheer amount of code that must be flawlessly interfaced and the potential vulnerabilities that can ensue. While full disk encryption (FDE) is one step closer to a more secure OS, encryption without strong authentication isn’t enough. For security-conscious users, pre-boot authentication is the only way to go.

Job Scheduling Maze in Distributed IT Landscapes – Part 2 » The TEC Blog
Scheduler — This Microsoft Windows -based layer consists of the ActiveBatch automation intelligence and logic to understand the requirements presented in operating a real-time, event-driven system; ActiveBatch Backend – This database tier is where the “job” definitions and templates are maintained along with how the “jobs” are to be triggered (i.e., date/time-based, event-based, data-based, or on-demand). This layer also determines which resources are required (e.g., servers) to run the

“Whistler” Beta on the Web?
Source code for a future Microsoft OS, code-named “Whistler”, mysteriously appeared on the Internet in mid-March. How did it get there? Does it matter? And why does Microsoft management keep making statements that are later retracted?

WINDOWS CE CAR: code got to Active Windows in the first place. Market Impact The immediate impact to the marketplace is minimal. What is more interesting is trying to determine how Whistler ended up on the Net in the first place. We see four possibilities at present: Piracy by a current/former Microsoft employee We believe this is the likeliest scenario. We expect there just may be someone, somewhere (now or formerly) inside of MS who may be just a teensy bit less loyal to the corporation than Messrs. Allchin, Gates,

How MWL Fights E-threats
When you connect to the Internet, you do so through the Windows Socket (Winsock) layer. While this layer is an integral part of the Windows operating system and acts as an interface between your computer and the Net, it cannot distinguish the difference between good traffic and bad. MicroWorld Winsock Layer (MWL) technology helps by sitting on the Winsock layer and analyzing the traffic—before it gets to your computer.

Microsoft to Purchase Softway Systems
Microsoft Corp. announced on September 20th that it will purchase privately held Softway Systems Inc., a developer of Unix/NT interoperability software.

WINDOWS CE CAR: Unix users migrate to Windows NT. Market Impact This acquisition will provide Microsoft with a stronger position in the Unix market, since Unix applications will be able to run natively on Windows NT. Softway also intends to develop a version of its Interix software that will support 64-bit Unix applications on the upcoming (mid-2000) 64-bit Windows, which we believe will further add to Microsoft s strength. Although this will not increase overall market growth, it should lead to market consolidation.
