No Back Doors. No Open Windows.
To boot or pre-boot, that is the question. There’s no doubt that operating systems (OSs) are complicated given the sheer amount of code that must be flawlessly interfaced and the potential vulnerabilities that can ensue. While full disk encryption (FDE) is one step closer to a more secure OS, encryption without strong authentication isn’t enough. For security-conscious users, pre-boot authentication is the only way to go.

Forum 2000, Microsoft’s conference where it will unveil details of its Next Generation Windows Services, has been delayed three weeks. This is the latest development in a week that has seen yet another high-level staff departure, and yet another adverse development in the U.S. antitrust case. What’s next, a plague of locusts?

Will MS try the Open Source Gambit with WinCE? Why Not – Nothing Else Seems to Work
In what may be another attempt to gain some kind of foothold in the handheld and embedded-OS market, rumors are floating that Microsoft will open the source code for Windows CE.

WINDOWS UE: is contemplating giving away Windows CE to some developers for free. The company is unlikely to go so far as to try to claim its effort to be Linux-like open source, but it nonetheless seems to be counting on riding the open source movement s coattails. Microsoft Corp. could make public its plans to open the Windows CE source base as soon as its Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in late April, sources claim. For embedded-device markets such as set top boxes, Microsoft easily could afford

IA-64 Linux From Red Hat
Red Hat announces the availability of the source code for IA-64 platforms, the first of which will be Intel’s “Itanium” processor, due later this year.

WINDOWS UE: Itanium. We suspect that Windows has a larger lead in that arena, although we do not expect that Redmond has a ton of apps ready to roll whenever 64-bit Windows finally ships. Red Hat already has 64-bit experience on Compaq s Alpha processor, and Microsoft very publicly killed the Alpha-based version of 64-bit Windows (Ref. TEC News Analysis ), so the edge in technology familiarity goes to Red Hat in this case, but not by much. It would certainly be nice for Red Hat if they could get some of the

Microsoft Analyst Event Part One: What’s New for Fall 2012 » The TEC Blog
in Bellevue, WA, where Windows 8 and Surface were all the rage. Windows 8 is about the following three features: Performing tasks with fewer clicks — the “tiles” (formerly called the “Metro” look-and-feel) are updated in real time, whereas on, say, the Apple iPad one must invoke one app at a time for updates. Multi-tasking – on the iPad you can only do one thing at a time, while other apps are closed (except for listening to music in the background). Sharing — from wherever you are in the
